Scenic Way Pedestrian/Bike Project

October 31, 2007

Asotin County wants to build a bike path? Follow its progress on the advocacy page.

This is very good news. Any a time local government is able to find funds to improve the trails, cyclists should be pleased. In addition, cyclists should get involved.

The purpose of this trail is to connect the Heights with West Clarkston at Fleshman Way and 15th Street. This trail is needed to bring children and adults from the Heights to the Aquatic Center as well as to bring middle school students to the Heights.

While club cyclists may not use this trail often–it is not on any of our usual routes, raising public consciousness of cycle/pedestrian traffic is a good thing. We should talk it up even if we don’t live in Clarkston. What are the trail issues? the transition to street issues? Maintenance? Will anyone use the trail if it is overgrown with puncture vine? How about lighting? What about sweeping?

A fledgling effort at trail building could be the last if the trail is poorly designed and maintained resulting in little or no actual use. It is in the interest of the cycling community everywhere to see that new trails are well designed.
Yes, there is a limited budget. We can’t have everything we might want, but isn’t it great that Asotin County is making an effort? Let’s support it. You can give suggestions and comments through me at treasurer@twinriverscyclists.org

Ragbrai ban in Crawford County Iowa

October 30, 2007
Crawford county was sued by a cyclist’s widow for failing to maintain the road. The response: ban future large group rides.
Law suits have repercussions as well as poor road maintenance. Can a government ban citizens from congregating? http://www.bikingbis.com/blog/_archives/2007/10/12/3286050.html

This week’s resolution to ban RAGBRAI bike rides from Crawford County’s roads could set a precedent that might be felt across Iowa.
