New Rides Scheduled at TRC Board Meeting

July 18, 2008

The minutes of the July 17th board meeting are posted on the balancesheet. We discussed Bike Month plans and the organization of a club hosted ride up the Spiral highway next Fall, but of most interest are the new rides on the calendar.

Minutes for June 19th TRC Board Meeting

June 20, 2008

The meeting minutes are posted over on the balance sheet or load the pdf directly here.

The meeting started at 7:34 at Tamra’s house we enjoyed the evening sitting in her backyard while her Koi pond burbled in the background.

Meetings with Carol are very businesslike. The agenda in hand helps keep us focused but I think the order is a much a product of being very busy. This month planning began for Bike Month for next year as well as for the new fee-ride on the Spiral Highway scheduled for Fall 2009.

In addition we held a long discussion over how to compensate SAG drivers. We will be collecting data this season to refine our structure but we are all agreed that SAG is important for major rides and should not be done gratis. We are asking for $5.00 per rider at shorter rides and $10.l00 for the Joseph Ride. These will not be collected up front as fees but we do expect riders to contribute. If we feel the collecton is inadequate we’ll make up the difference from club funds. We don’t thnk club funds should be the first line of SAG support remuneration.

We are discussing paying a portion of tuition for becoming League of American Cyclists certified instructgors. This is pending but needs to

June 19, 2008

Hey, we have competition in our quest to represent cycling in the are. A new club has formed. It looks to be based in Moscow–many of their listed rides start there. They have a couple of rides in the valley including the Lapwai Loop though they do not know about the Arrow extension.

They list several Bike and Brew Weekends this summer which seem to mean mountain biking and drinking beer. Mat Morra leads a weekly Thursday evening ride of 20+ miles from Tidyman’s. They do also list our Time Trials.

I suspect they are mostly younger guys and gals or the faster sort like Mat but we should see this as another opportunity to find riders and build support for cycling.

Check ‘em out. http://www.palousecycling.com/

TRC Board Meeting

June 19, 2008

Our monthly board meeting will be at Tamra’s in the Lewiston Orchards. 2211 Powers Avenue. We’ll start the meeting at 7:30 which will give us time to get to Tamra’s after the time trials.

These board meetins are open to all members. Come help the board plan for bike month for next year, a new club race for next year, and , oh, yes, suggest a ride.

This week in TRC Cycling

June 17, 2008

The cycling season has warmed up in more than just the temperatures, finally. If you’ve been waiting for the warm weather to get your bike out, now’s the time.

June is traditionally the month of the hill climbs so I’m sure you are all really fit and ready to compete with Brian Morra who won the White Bird Hill Climb last week. Don’t know if Bill McPherson, who took second, will be down for I Made the Grade since Helen’s off in Europe with her grand-daughter. You are still welcome to race the third climb, Bite the Bullet Day Tour, but we’ve changed it to a semi-supported club ride on the 29th of June.

So, the usual events first:

Ice Cream Ride 6:30 Tuesdays all summer long

Rained out 3 out of 4 weeks so far, this looks like the best opportunity for a social ride on the levy we’ve had so far this year. Organize at Clarkston’s Baskin Robins on Bridge about 6:15. Roll out at 6:30 for a 20 to 25 mile ride at an easy  pace and stay for ice cream on the return about 8:30. All our rides are no-drop affairs. Feel free to ride as far as you like and turn around. Usually we ride an out-and-back to Asotin and up Asotin Creek. Linda thinks some new, non-lycra, riders may join us this week so behave yourselves.

Crazy Ladies Wednesdays all Summer Long

With Pam out of town the calendar needs someone to keep it updated, but the rides cointinue from the Southway Boat Launch Wednesday Mornings at 9. They’re crazy, they don’t go fast, but they do manage to put on some distance as time goes by. Good group to start with.

Time Trials Thursdays all Summer Long

Last time I was a little hard on this event. So . . .

Want to build strength and stamina? Tired of watching the spinners pass you by on the hills? Come test your fitness weekly at the two mile mark west of Red Wolf Crossing on Down River Road. Riders are timed individually each starting at 30 sec intervals with the slowest going first. It’s fun to try to beat your own best time or to see if you can catch the fellow in front of you with that 30 sec lead.

TRC Board Meeting: Thursday, June 19th 7:30 pm

Yes, you read that right. It’s Thursday. Surprised me too. Thought we had another week but Tamra’s been working feverishly to finish her bathroom project for this week, so let’s not disappoint her.

These meetings are open to all TRC club members. Come help shape the direction the board is taking this club this year.

If you have items for the agenda, please send them to me or directly to Carol by Wednesday evening about 6. I’ll send my version of the agenda to Carol Wednesday night.

Tamra’s House
The meeting will start as usual after Time Trials. Expect the meeting itself to begin no later than 7:30. Tamra’s is on Powers just a little further out than Sean’s. 2211 Powers Ave.

I Made the Grade, Saturday 6/21/08

Not a club event but one of the three big June hill climbs. This race starts at Chief Timothy Park on Highway 12 about 8 miles west of Clarkston. Registration is at 7 and the race begins at 8. Lots of TRCers will be riding. The church provides a shuttle to take you and your bike back to Chief Timothy, but many of us just ride back. Even better, ride out to Timothy for the warm up, race, and then just ride home. And join us to celebrate our 10,000 Mile Challenge for May’s Bike Month following I Made the Grade.

l0,000 Mile Challenge Club Barbecue Saturday 6/21/08 Clarkston’s Beachview Park

We’ve always had a barbecue following I Made the Grade but the $5.00 parking fee at Chief Timothy seems to have discouraged folks. Look for us at the south end of Beachview Park (on top but at the far end from the old pool) about noon. The club provides hot dogs and hamburger and the fixings. We’d appreciate a salad or desert. The barbecue is free to members and $5.00 for non-members.

Kendrick Ride, Sunday 6/22/08 Southway Boat Launch 10:00 am

Debbie likes to visit her Kendrick relatives now and then. We’ll ride Tammany over Web Ridge to Lapwai and through Spalding park to Arrow before turning up route 3 to Julietta and Kendrick. We return on 12. The total route is around 70 miles with little climbing after Web Ridge. Lunch at Zoe’s is a favorite. I may start at 8 for a few extra miles before joining the group. Let me know if you are interested.

TRC Shirts and Socks

May 29, 2008

Lance is holding the bag–literaly. He’s got a bag full of cotton Ts from the Winchester Bite  the Bullet ride as well as some good cool max socks with Bite the Bullett embroidered in red.

He’s letting the shirts go for $1 but he says the socks are too nice. $5.00 for a pair of coll-max socks. Still not bad.

He hasn’t given me an inventory, so if you are interested email Lance at lance@clarkston.com

TRCBoard Schedules new rides!

May 23, 2008

The monthly meeting of your Twin Rivers Cyclists board was held at Mike Riddle’s last night. You may read minutes of the meeting by surfing over to the Balance Sheet and selecting the appropriate pdf form the navigation menu. Or just open the pdf here.

Highlights of this meeting were the new rides:

    1. Sunday 1pm starts will continue through June unless the weather turns hot.
    2. June 5th, Thursday Time Trial becomes Senior Games competition. Any one may ride, but if you are 50 or older you may register on site to compete in the Senior Games’s only cycling event.
    3. June 8th, Saturday Bike and Brew from El Sombrero 10 am start. Celebrates Mike’s Birthday. 58 mile ride.
    4. June 10th, Tuesday Linda leads an Easy Does It Ride on the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes from Heyburn State Park. Details to come. 20 miles or so of flat, lake view cycling.
    5. June 14th Saturday on the Southfork. Start in Kamiah at 8 and ride up Harpster to Grangeville and back down Mt. Idaho along the Southfork of the Clearwater back to Kamiah. Option to climb the forested switchbacks of the Old White Bird Grade before going down Mt. Idaho.
    6. June 22nd, Sunday Kendrick ride starting at 10 am from the Southway boat launch.
    7. June 28th, Saturday Breakfast Run. Bike to Mainstreet Grill in down town Lewiston for breakfast at 9 am. Then bike home or form up groups to extend your ride. This should be the first of a series of breakfast runs.

In addition the hike on the Breakheart Trail is tentatively scheduled for July 19th, one of the dates Bill Mannschrek offered us. I’m waiting on a confirmation from Bill.

Finally, if you are traveling toward Coulee Dam you might wish to spend the night at the Columbia River Inn . If so, just mention you are a member of the TRC and you’ll get a discount. Some exculsions apply.

TRC Board Meeting May

May 22, 2008

The May board meeting is at Mike Riddle’s house in the Orchards following the Time Trials. That means Mike and others who do Time Trials may be a bit late. The meeting is scheduled for 7 but will start in earnest at 7:30.

The agenda doesn’t look quite as crowded this month as last but we still have several reports and some new business as well. And, it’s high time we got around to scheduling more rides. Come with your ideas for rides.

Board meetings are open to all members. Anyone can lead a ride so if there’s a ride you’d like to lead from a Saturday morning breakfast ride to a “gasp” mountain bike trek (I won’t say adventure), bring it on. Worked for George, didn’t it?

Volunteers Please!

May 1, 2008

The Health and Wellness Fair is May 15th from 10 am to 2 pm. Linda can’t make it but I see the Riddles are joining me for the first hour. We need at least three more volunteers. If you can spare an hour on Thursday two weeks from today, please sign up on this nifty form.

TRC Board Minutes April 24th

April 25, 2008

The minutes will be available over on the balance sheet page in pdf format just as soon as I get a chance to post them. Look for them on the navigation bar on the left side.

HIghlights of the meeting

The club has $3353.68 cash on hand as of 4/23/08. We made 631.67 on Devil’s Slide.

Bill Mannschrek and Mike Warnock are hiking what may become the Breakheart Trail reconnoitering a possible club hike  later this season to  showcase the  potential for a Rails to Trails conversion.  The board feels it is important to go on record as a  public group advocating this conversion should the railbed become available. I’m looking into  contacts provided by Bill Mannschrek.

Don’t forget that May is Bike Month and your club is actively promoting all forms of cycling but commuter cycling in particular. Check us out at the Bike Month Page. You will find information about the two introductory classes Jen Cunningham is holding through the Parks and Rec.

10,000 mile challenge. As a celebration of Bike Month we challenge our area cyclists to join us in achieving 10,00 miles of cycling and cycle commuting miles in May. I’ll post a form for reporting your totals in a couple of days. We’ll cap this challenge with a club hosted barbecue in either Hereth or Airport parks. This barbecue will replace the traditional barbecue after I Made the Grade which has lost participation in recent years quite likely because of the parking fees at Timothy.

Sean is working with a local pilot to get a picture of the Spiral Highway that would work well for a new club jersey from Primal Wear.

We will participate in the Lewiston Helath and Wellness Fair at the Lewiston Community Center on Thursday, May 15h. We’ll need a couple of volunteers to man our booth. The fair runs from 10 to 2. If you have an hour to volunteer, I’ll have a sign up sheet available on line shortly.

Bite the Bullet lives. No we are not going to hold a race. Better, we’ll start in Lapwai, ride up Garden gulch, down to CuldeSac then climb Old Winchester, take lunch, spend 3 miles on 95 and return through Reuben Gifford, Cottonwood Creek and back down Garden Gulch. We should have someone driving along sag, let’s kick in some gas money and lunch. This will be Sunday, June 22nd.

We want to begin some regular rides on Saturdays at 8. These wil not be the centuries I call for but will be longer say out to Julietta, Jacques Spur, or a loop for lunch. I’ll probably look for ways to extend the group rides for longer trips. Anyone interested?

New Rides:

Ride from the Riddles: Mike and Nicky come through with two more cool rides:

May 4th we’ll start at Nicki’s and ride for 58 miles to celebrate her birthday. Brownies and ice cream at the Riddles’ after the ride. 10 am start. Bring snacks for the ride. We’ll be riding toward Buffalo Eddy and there’s no support beyond Asotin.

Pump Up the Pulse July 4th

Years ago before I did much cycling I brought my Giant Innova to Pomeroy for what was probably my first organized event. Mark Schmidt hosted it in those days, but it died out. We are going to revive it as a club ride. Meet at the Pomeroy City park at 9 for the ride with a potluck afterward.

Sean proposes a new fall race/ride up Spiral to Uniontown, across Thorncreek and back on the new highway in Idaho. This will replace Bite the Bullet as a money raiser and we’ll probablly not start it this year. We want to see if we can make it a metric century. Anyone got a clever name for this ride? Is that a contest I feel coming on?

Lots of energy at these board meetings. Remember they are open to all club members. Come help us promote cycling for, as Steve says, fun, fitness, and transportation. Next board meeting will be May 22nd after the time trials at Mike and Nicki’s in the Orchards.
