The bike rack at Lincoln remained mostly abandoned while I was a teacher there. But it wasn’t because we discouraged students from riding to school. In fact we kept the campus open encouraging use of the basketball nets and the concrete surfaces for skateboarders and bmxers. We had some vandalism from time to time but not a big problem. So why prevent children from riding to school as policy? Well, it’s not safe, of course. Why not? All those parent’s in a hurry to drop off children and get to work. Maybe cars should be bannished by policy from school yards.–Corrie

Many of us around here are big fans of encouraging school-age children (and their parents) to ride bicycles to school…it gives kids much-needed exercise and helps teach them that it IS possible to live car-lite. Besides, riding a bike to avoid gridlock around the school is a fantastic way to start and end the day.
