Great Falls Optimists Share Bikes

We hear about donating bikes for Africa. We’ve hear about programs to place bikes around cities to be used and returned. But this is a new way to promote cycling. Great Falls, Montana apparently failed with the Yellow Bike program but with the help of some donatiosn and volunteers found a substittue.–Corrie

More than 20 years ago, the PM Optimists launched an experimental service project called the Yellow Bike Shop — and learned from its failure.

The idea behind the program was to leave conspicuous yellow bicycles at various locations in town so pedestrians could hop and change up their routine of walking.

“We kept finding the bikes in the river,” said Bill Beckett, president of PM Optimists. “It wasn’t a good program.”

The Optimists didn’t stop there.
