Helmets, Bikeways and the Culture of Fear | Commute Orlando

Okay, so some folks argue that it safer to not wear a helmet. We dealt with that one yesterday.

Today, the arguement is a bit different. Encouraging helmet use discourages people from cycling.

The accompanying article takes no issue with that position and adds that the same thing is true of bike paths and lanes which promote the idea, as does the helmet, that cycling is inherently unsafe and needs special treatment ie. helmets, lanes. That seems to be the thinking behind Cascade Bicycle Clubs long-running advocacy for vulnerable user laws in Washington State. Special Treatment for cyclists?

I admit its hard to get a handle on this stuff given we lack significant ridership as well as infrastructure to help bring this argument into focus for us. For now I’ll just keep wearing my helmet even if my doing so scares you.–Corrie
