Long Beach may abandon bicycle licenses

Licensing your bicycle is one of the things anti-bicycle types like to propose. Generally they are arguing that roadds are built using licensing fees. That’s just not true. License fees don’t begin to pay the cost of our road ways. I doubt a bicycle license fee dedicated toward bike paths would generate enough dollars to be meaningful.

What usually happens is the community discovers the licensing program to be ineffective and more costly to administer than they can bring in with fees.

Still, a properly adminstrated registry might be a good idea. –Corrie

Requirements for mandatory bicycle registration in some California cities appear to be going the way of the penny farthing into near-extinction.

Long Beach is the latest city to consider abandoning its mandatory bicycle license program. Late last year San Jose ended bicycle registration, a law that had been on the books since 1974, and Los Angeles ended its program in 2009.
