Details of 2009 bicycle fatalities; state-by-state tally

Stats like these become available so late it is hard to get excited, but 2009 was a good year for traffic safety and bicycling. Not perfect, of course, but good. Most crashes involving bicycles can be avoided by learning some simple rules about riding your bike on the road. Or, we could build more separated facilities. That helps too. Of course, it is a lot more expensive to implement.–Corrie

“Traffic Safety Facts of 2009” is a follow-up report to one issued last September trumpeting that overall traffic fatalities in the US dropped to their lowest level since 1950. Bicycling fatalities also dropped that year, by 12%.
