I’ll never forget the cover of Bicycling that October. All black, save for one smaller center image of Lance Armstrong, glowing like the sun in the darkness, hands up, transcendent expression pointed skyward. He’d done something no one thought possible: Won the Tour de France after having been given a coin flip’s chance of living just three years prior. I got chills every time I looked at it. I still do today.
