No doubt the nation has a huge deficit. No doubt we’ll all be paying more taxes and receiving fewer services. That includes those who ride bicycles.

That’s right, if you ride a bike, you may want to participate in the national debate over fixing the economy. Throw all your chips into deficit reduction and you may not like what happens to your roads. On the other hand, who’s going to pay off that big deficit? Well, the election is less than three months away yet there remains a fair amount of mystery about where Mitt Romney stands on various policy issues, from trade agreements to transit. As governor of Massachusetts, he had a mixed record but did initiate some innovative smart growth programs. If there’s one thing that’s become clear this election season, however, it’s that Romney’s past performance has little bearing on his current positions.
